Quality Graphics for your Web Site - Web-Design

Quality Graphics for your Web Site

For most people graphic design does not come easy. Unfortunately this is
why there's an abundance of shall we say "struggling websites." At best,
most are less than great. Graphics are the tools of your website that give
your reader or potential prospect the visual they need to "see" what your
site is all about. The graphics of your site must transform your written
call to action into a live demonstration.

To be effective you know your website must flow with well positioned and
well relating graphics. Maybe you already know the image you want to
create. The next step is to figure out how to do it.

Obviously if you don't have artistic talent you must find the graphics you
want already created or hire a professional graphic designer (often the
best choice.)

When you start your search for great looking graphics on the web you'll
come up with thousands of sites offering clip-art graphics and
photographs. Don't become overwhelmed. Also there are a few terms you'll
want to learn. Understanding the lingo will save you much time and effort.

Terms:

Web Graphics - Web graphics includes dividers, buttons, arrows,
backgrounds, etc.

Clip Art - Clip art is images that don't fall under the web-graphics
category. Some examples might be people, buildings, signs, objects, etc.
Don't sell the clip art short. It can get your message across very
effectively.

Animations - Animated graphics, these may be either animated graphics or
animated clip art.

Photos - Photos, as distinct from clip art. These images will be photo
quality, whereas clip art is less distinct.

Site Search - Is a site search provided? This is an important feature of
any site that provides images. You don't want to spend hours and hours
searching through every graphic on a site, just to find the ONE you need.

There are thousands of sites providing graphics for free. You'll find
three of the most popular one listed below.

http://www.freegraphics.com
http://www.clipart.com
http://www.gifart.com

If you're looking for high-quality photos of any subject try
http://www.Photos.com. http://www.gettyimages.com. These photos aren't
free, but the quality is excellent.

There are some sites that charge a membership fee in order to view and
download the images they contain but these images are royalty free
thereafter. Some of these sites allow you to have a membership term of one
week. One week is often sufficient to get the images you need.

Typically even the free sites will have some terms and conditions to using
their images. Some are free for personal use, while commercial sites are
expected to pay.

As you browse for your graphics, choose carefully. Attempt to make sure
your graphics work well together to complement the theme of your site.
Using too many graphics can make your site appear cluttered. Too few and
you'll know something is missing. It's easy to spend hours and hours
tinkering with individual graphics, to get it "just right." Rarely will
you be able to achieve perfection, but an acceptable, workable, design is
possible.

Quality Website Design At An Affordable Price
I always have people asking me if I know of anybody who can build them a
website which is affordable but also professional looking. They want the
website to be search engine friendly, there is no point in having a
website if no one can see it, and fully optimised.

What Your Website REALLY Says About You And Why It Matters
Everything you say and do says something about you. This has never been
more true than in a text based environment like the Internet.
Website Basics
The Basics You have a flourishing business - everything is in its place.
You just miss one important piece of marketing: an Internet Presence a
website.
What I Look For In a Website
As my occupation is that of a proofreader, one of the first things I look
for in a website is quality copy; to me it's important that the textual
content is clear and concise with correct spelling and proper punctuation.
Many websites I have looked at have sadly failed to follow this basic rule
and the build emphasis has been centred on flashy eye-catching graphics,
quite often at the expense of the copy.
Teach Yourself CSS The Easy Way
I taught myself HTML back in the mid-nineties and was proud of the fact
that I was able to accomplish the design of fairly complex web pages with
nothing more than a starter HTML book, an HTML reference book, and the
knowledge I had stored in my head. But back in those days, we web
designers had what looking back was a fairly limited amount of tools with
which to work, and the quality (or lack thereof) of sites on the web was
lackluster at best.

Graphic Terms- The Basics Part I - Web-Design

Graphic Terms- The Basics Part I

You're almost set. The content of your website, e-book, or software is
complete. Ready to put together your e-book or software on the market. In
order to turn your prospect into buyer, the look of your e-cover is just
as important as the content. What to do? If you're adventurous and seeking
the how-to's of self-design below is a short list of terms you'll need to
know. If you're considering having your e-cover professionally designed
(smart move) the terms below will help you talk intelligently about your
project.

Aliasing
Aliasing happens when a computer monitor printer, or graphics file does
not have a high enough resolution to represent a graphic image or text. An
aliased image has the "jaggies."

Anti-Aliasing
Anti-Aliasing is smoothing or blending the transition of pixels in an
image thus making the edges appear smooth, not jagged.

Banner
A banner is a graphic image placed on a web site as an advertisement.
Banners are commonly used for brand awareness and generating sales.

Bevel
A beveled effect to a graphic gives the image a raised appearance by
applying highlight colors and shadow colors to the inside and outside
edges of the graphic.

Bitmap Image (bmp)
A graphic defined by specifying the colors of dots or pixels that make up
the picture. Common types of bitmap graphics are GIF and JPEG

Cast Shadow
A cast shadow creates added emphasis on perspective. Cast shadows can be
stretched, rotated, and skewed to create a realistic 3-D effect

CMYK
CMYK stands for the colors Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black. In print design
colors are defined as a percentage of each of these 4 colors. For example,
the color black would be 0-0-0-100. Display devices usually define colors
using RGB.

Color Cast
Using a color cast will change the hue of a selected part of an image,
while keeping the saturation and brightness intact. Looking at an image
with a color is like looking at it through colored glasses.

Dithering
Dithering is combining pixels from a 256-color palette into patterns that
approximate other colors. At a distance the eye merges the pixels into a
single color. To display a full-color graphic on a 256-color monitor,
computers must simulate the colors it cannot display.

DPI
DPI stands for dots per inch. DPI specifies the resolution of an output
device, such as a printer.

Drop Shadow
A drop shadow gives an image depth by creating shading offset behind the
image.

Duotone
The application of two colors to provide richer tones than a single-color
image.

Emboss
Embossing a graphic image adds dimension by making the image appear as if
it were carved as a projection from a flat background.

Feathering
Feathering the edge of a graphic gradually diffuses the edge, making the
edge look blurry.

Font
A font is a complete set of characters in a specific size and style of
type. Some examples are Times New Roman, Arial, and Century.

GIF
GIF stand for graphic Interchange Format. GIF images are the most widely
used graphic format on the web. GIF images displays up to 256 colors.

Glow
A glow creates a surrounding highlight of an image. A high radiance
creates a soft, subtle, glow and a low radiance creates a hard, bright
glow. An example of a bright glow is neon.

Gradient
A gradual transition of colors.

Graphic Backgrounds
The bottom layer on a web page, usually with either a design or color that
highlights the copy above.

Grayscale
An application of the color black that simulates a range of tones.
Grayscale images have no hue.

Hexadecimal
A numbering system using a base of 16. The first 10 digits are 0-9. The
next 6 are A-F. Hexadecimal numbers are used to define colors on the web.
For example the color white is hexadecimal #FFFFFF.

Hue
Hue is the actual color of an object. It is measured as a location on a
color wheel, expressed in degrees.

JPEG
JPEG is the abbreviation for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEG images
allow for more colors than GIF images and are usually smaller in size.

Kerning
Kerning is the horizontal spacing between the letters in a word.

Leading
The vertical spacing between lines of text.

To Hire or Not to Hire a Website Designer
In the early years of the internet the actual design of a website was
either very basic or had to be done using a software package that needed a
specialist to use it. Not surprisingly, website designers were in short

Content is Crucial!
Content is undoubtedly the most important element of a website. It is the
defining factor for a website, that which catches the interest of your

Increase Sales on Your Website! Use Graphics! - Web-Design

Increase Sales on Your Website! Use Graphics!

How many times have you clicked on a website only to find a screen full of
text? You read a large-scale headline and then all you see is text, much
like reading a letter. You scan down the page looking for something to
attract your attention.

Do you know what you're really looking for? You're looking, subconsciously
or not, for a picture to show you what's in the web site. You want to
"see" what you're getting into.

A website without graphics is losing a major portion of the audience it's
owner hopes to attract. Think about it for a moment. Whenever you are
reading, your mind's eye is creating visual images of the perception of
the words you are reading.

There are three main areas to which the use of graphics should be applied.
The first is a graphic header. This is typically the first area of your
site a prospect sees. It must be powerful enough to grab the prospects
attention and hang on for dear life. Once a prospect clicks on your site
you've got approximately 8 seconds to entice him to continue reading.
There's no better way to grab his attention with a picture.

The second area that requires graphics to increase effectiveness is your
product or service. Regardless of what you're selling there must be a
graphic to promote it. What if you don't sell a tangible product? Let's
use membership sites as an example. You're selling a private membership.
Increase your sales by simply showing a graphic of a "membership card".
This will make your prospect feel like he's going to be a member of a
special club. People love to feel "special."

It doesn't matter whether what you're selling is tangible or not, there's
always a graphic you can use to depict what it is you're promoting.
Remember people buy based upon emotions. Pictures always activate emotions.

The third area often overlooked is the background graphic of your site.
Well designed, with properly chosen colors this area will automatically
set the mood for whatever you're offering. Again, the emotions must be
activated.

These three areas of your website 1) graphic header 2) product e-cover and
3) background graphics when professionally designed and implemented can
greatly boost sales and profits from your site.

Your Graphics- Are They Really Working For You? - Web-Design

Your Graphics- Are They Really Working For You?

(Making Your Graphics Work For You)

It's no secret that a picture is worth a thousand words or that people
really do judge a book by its cover. Effectively using graphic headers,
e-covers and background graphics can send your profits soaring. Amateur
looking graphics are worse than no graphics at all.

The graphics you use on your website should intensify the screen's
message. Correctly used graphics will activate the prospects emotions into
a buying mode. This can be effectively accomplished by incorporating a few
simple marketing strategies into your graphic designs.

For example, when choosing the color of your graphics don't simply choose
your favorite color. Identify your niche market and target the color
scheme of your graphics to that market. Let's use a gardening site as an
example. You wouldn't want to use colors like purple, gold or silver, as
they aren't very prevalent in nature. Greens, browns, and orange colors
are much better suited to display the intent of a gardening site.

Too many graphics can clutter the screen and slow the time it takes a
screen to load. Since smaller graphics download quickly, your graphics
should typically be smaller in size. Using too few graphics can cause the
site to look empty or incomplete. Neither of which sponsor sales. The
entire theme of the site should come together in a happy medium fostering
a smooth flowing effective decision -making process for your prospect.

The background graphics of your site are equally important to your site's
effectiveness. Backgrounds should not interfere with the readability of
the text. Again, they should complement and support the desired effect of
your site. Color plays an important role in choosing background graphics.
Choose wisely.

When designing e-covers for your e-books or software products make sure
they powerfully steer the attention of your prospect to the emotion that
will trigger the sale. Make the picture fill the promise your product will
deliver. Remember people make purchases based upon emotions. Next they
justify the purchase with logic or benefits. Your graphics should satisfy
the emotional desire.

Hiring a Graphic Designer - Web-Design

Hiring a Graphic Designer

You've come up with a great product. You've got the sales letter written
for your website. Now you need the graphic design to complement your
product and the text that describes it. Not being artistically inclined or
adept at the technicalities of computer graphics, you decide you need some
help.

You may be thinking, "I'm not sure I can afford to hire a professional
graphic designer." The truth of the matter is that you most likely can't
afford not too.

Why?

A poorly designed web site, or a site that is glaring "homemade, homemade,
homemade" gives the impression that the product or service it is promoting
is of the same quality. As you've heard before- People do judge a book by
its cover. Your book's cover is your web site.

Fact of Life on the Internet- If your entire site doesn't look
professionally designed you've got major problems. At best making a profit
with a poorly designed website is going to be a struggle.

So? you decide maybe your site does need the touch of a pro. Who do you
choose?

As you begin your search you're obviously going to try and make sure you
get the best "bang for your buck". Before you make a decision make sure
all your questions are answered, preferably in writing. Some questions
that you will definitely want answers for are listed below.

1) Is this person a professional? (Ask to see samples of their work)

2) Is this person trustworthy? (Ask how long they've been in business, and
if they can provide references)

3) Are the prices fair and reasonable? (Make it clear you will be getting
more than one proposal on the work you need)

4) Will I get the quality I need? (Make sure upfront that the professional
you're hiring will do revisions if necessary.)

Many of these questions can often be answered while viewing the designer's
own site. It will give you an instant review of their work. Often there
will also a page containing samples of their work. If not, don't hesitate
to ask.
