You Too Can Have an Amazing Website

It is a well-known fact that a successful business depends greatly on how it is marketed. With an ever increasing dependence on the web, the use of a professional website is not only a necessity, but a priority. Although it is a common thought that only large businesses can have top-notch websites, with the tools available today what seemed impractical can now be a reality. Best of all, designing an extraordinary website can be done without hiring expensive web developers to create your site from scratch. Usually the first comment I get from my customers is, "I have the idea, but not the tools." In this article, I will recommend which tools are the most helpful and where to find these tools so that you too can have an amazing website.

So you say, "I have the idea, but not the tools. What are these tools and where do I get them?" Let me answer that question with a question. Have you ever heard of web site templates? If not, they're your answer to a professional website at a very reasonable price, usually around $60 to $70. A website template is a ready-made website design created for you to use as the foundation for quick and high-quality web development. There are thousands of templates available online so you are virtually guaranteed to find something that suits your design and format needs. It can be as easy as simply adding your text to the template or rearranging photos along with your text to produce the outcome you have been searching for.

Finding web site templates is easy, but be aware of the differences in template providers you will come across. Performing a Google or Yahoo search with the phrase "web site templates" will yield several vendor choices and not all of them offer the quality you demand. They all promise the best templates around, but that is obviously not the case. So, how do you find the right template vendor? First, visit some of the sites you come across and examine their templates. You will know you are on the right track if you answer "Yes" to the question, "Am I impressed with these templates?" Always trust your taste.

Next, explore how many templates the vendor offers and how often their database is updated. As a rule of thumb, the more they have the better they are. This helps assure you that your choice will be more unique than otherwise. If you choose a template from a vendor who only offers a few select quality templates then the chances are that a great deal of other customers have chosen that same template. You certainly don't want a website that is practically identical to dozens of others online. You will also want a vendor who updates their site on a regular basis. Weekly updates are good, but daily updates are even better. This guarantees that they will have fresh templates on a regular basis for you to choose from.

Finally, you want to make sure that your template is editable. This means that your template will come with the appropriate files (PSD, HTML, SWF, and FLA) that will allow you to make the necessary changes to your template. Ask you vendor before making your selection. Most templates come with these files, but it is better to be safe than sorry. You should be able to download your selection immediately or your vendor will provide a link to do so.

Great! Now you have a really impressive template and can't wait to make the changes that will get you a completed website that blows away your competition. Well, you're halfway there. You have one more important choice to make. Who will do the editing? You will either have someone internally run with the project or you can hire someone and outsource the job. If you decide to handle things internally make sure you have the necessary software to edit your files and someone who is somewhat familiar with how to do the editing. This is what your template vendor probably didn't tell you. Certainly it isn't as easy as purchasing a template and plugging in text. If it were then there wouldn't be a market for web design and development companies. If you're confident about handling it yourself then great, but be careful. You might find yourself investing a lot of time and money trying to get your desired results.

Your alternate choice, hiring a development firm, will almost certainly get your site looking and functioning the way you want it, but for a fee, of course. It is easy to find a development firm to handle your needs and you can find several online. Simply search with the keyphrase "web site design". Call or email a few of them explaining your situation and needs and ask for a quote to perform the editing for you. Depending on the amount of editing you will require you should receive price quotes in the $500 -$1500 range. This is a very reasonable price to pay for a professional website. Most likely, you will be glad you did.

Give People What They Want And Watch Your Profits Soar!

Do you know why the majority of people use the Internet?

The majority of people use the Internet to do some type of research. In
other words, to read.

Now, how can you use this knowledge to your advantage?

Simple. Give people what they want! Provide plenty of good, quality, free
content on your website and refresh it regularly.

What's free content?

Well, free content can take on many forms, from e-books to free advice and
everything in between. However, what I'm talking about is free content in
the form of articles.

But they shouldn't be just be any kind of articles. The articles should
closely match the theme of your website. For example, if your website's
theme is about Internet marketing, then you would have articles relating
to advertising and marketing.

If your website's theme is about computers, then you would have articles
relating to the service and maintenance of computers, and so on and so
forth.

So, where do you get free articles?

Well, you could always write your own. It's really not that difficult.
However, if you find writing your own articles too daunting a task,
there's a million places on the Internet that can provide you with free
content. Here are just a few:

http://www.articlecity.com

http://www.ideamarketers.com

http://www.ezinearticles.com

http://www.goarticles.com

http://www.site-reference.com

Also, capture your visitors names and e-mail addresses. How? Start your
own ezine or newsletter and ask your visitors to subscribe.

Since people rarely purchase anything the first time they visit a website,
capturing their names and e-mail addresses will give you countless number
of opportunities to keep your name and the name of your business fresh in
your customers and prospects minds.

And don't be afraid to have a fee-based ezine or newsletter. Remember, the
true value of anything is in the eye of the beholder!

By giving before you take, you'll put your visitors in a much better frame
of mind to receive your offer.

Has Your Design Firm Run Amuck With Your Web Site?
What's happening to good web site design? Somehow we creative types at
interactive and traditional ad agencies have run amuck - we're building
web sites that may dazzle the senses, but don't really communicate much
about our client's business or products and services!1. Somehow I don't
think anyone has a burning desire to spend 30-60 seconds on the Index page
of a web site while another fancy Flash animation loads, complete with
snazzy graphics, audio, and way cool cutting edge graphics - not!! People
want to get real information, not razzle-dazzle graphics showing how great

Be Inspired to Create Better Websites

Being a writer, when I was asked to do some research into what makes a
good website, of course I straightaway went to check out all of my
favorite authors. After sifting through a few standard sites I remembered
to look at one of my all time respected writers-Paulo Coelho. Judging by
how many books he has sold he is obviously a lot of people's favorite, and
his website is exactly what you'd want to keep the fans happy.

If any of you are familiar with Coelho's work you will know how prolific
he has become all over the world. People love the simplicity of his
stories about the spiritual quests of all people and the idea that the
magical happens in everybody's lives, even the so-called 'ordinary,
normal' person. He to me comes across as a perfect example of the power of
human connection, his books having affected millions across all national
boundaries. As an Internet writer, to me he symbolizes the possibilities
lying in the future of the Web. Like a good book, the Internet too can
cross all imagined ideas of separation bringing people from all walks of
life together in the context of positive thought and action.

Coelho's website's homepage starts off with a simple black screen, and a
large photo of the man smiling-a very humanistic approach to this new
medium. It then has many different sections as well as links to relevant
sites, even his own web log (on-line journal) entitled, " Warrior of the
Light Online". I think I could spend innumerable hours reading over his
personal thoughts and pieces of information he has integrated from
elsewhere. Having this added website of an on-line diary gives the site
even more humanistic qualities, as any person can truly connect with
Coelho's innermost feelings and thoughts.

The sections on the main site are separated into categories like:
Biography, Paulo Coelho Institute, Photo Gallery, Road to Santiago,
Agenda, Books, Editions, Free downloads, Meditation, TV on-line (videos),
Warrior of Light, To journalists, FAQ, Message for the author, and
Recommend this site. We are talking about a very extensive and well
thought out site. Any type of individual or business, especially writers,
could learn a lot from this example.

Just to touch on a few aspects of the site's categories I'll focus on the
one's I had a good look at. The biography was excellent, an extremely
in-depth look at Coelho's life from childhood until present day. No holes
barred, he's not ashamed to tell of all his low points as well as the
usual list of one's achievements. It is very honest, he tells of how his
parents institutionalized him several times thinking he was crazy, as well
as stories of being tortured as a political prisoner and of his 'dark'
experiences with drugs and black magic. This humanistic perspective gives
the site a much more personal feel as well as eliciting reactions in
readers, much more powerful than a bland website that solely focuses on a
writer's books and how to purchase them.

The photo gallery is another dimension I have not witnessed on many other
sites. He again gives vision to his whole life with photos included from
areas entitled, Childhood, Transition, The crazy years, 2000/2001, 2002,
and Today. You see, this website isn't just a shop front or a facade for a
business. It gives the individual an opportunity to share his identity
with the whole world, a courageous act only taken by people who aren't
afraid to put themselves on the line, sharing their spirits with all of
humanity. This is the key to why the website is so powerful, one needs to
take risks to achieve success in life.

I could write extensively on the other categories of the site but I think
you could just go and check them out yourself. Me telling you what is a
good website isn't going to teach you much, you've got to experience
things for yourself to truly gain the knowledge you are looking for. Maybe
you'll be so inspired, one day it'll be your website I'm writing about!

Creating Quality Websites

Websites, there are literally billions of them out there in cyber-space. How many of them do you go to and just think this is boring, bland, or hard to use? It seems like too many to mention. So what makes a good website? I reckon it's about interaction. You've got to make the visitor interested. You've got to grab their attention. Many sites use plenty of bright and shiny gimmicks to attract you, but once you make it through to the content of the site it's just not worthy. A good site uses easy navigation, relevant content, and interactive media like comments and message boards. If you're fortunate, whoever builds your site may even have a few tricks up their sleeves to make it really fun with sound, video, and other interactive fun stuff.

Do you want people to come to your site and then tell their friend and family about it? Do you want to have huge amounts of visitors? Do you want to succeed in making your dreams come to fruition on the Web? Make your website exciting! It might be easier said than done, but there are people around whose job it is to construct and design sites for a living. If you can afford it, go for the best. How great is it when you come across a site that has some special feature that you've never seen elsewhere? Isn't it great when you find a site that relates to one of your interests that is simple and easy to get to the information you want? If you want to have people to come back again and again, you've got to keep updating the content to keep it fresh and interesting. Have a way for people to communicate with yourself and others who are into the same things. E.G. Forums, message boards and comments. The aim is to catch the 'viewer's' interest.

A lot of sites just look like giant advertisements and you have to search for the needle in the haystack to find out what the actual site is for. I know advertising is a way of making money, but if you want your site to have an authentic, respectable atmosphere that exudes a feeling of integrity, you better be careful. People are becoming wary of this consumer driven, mindless attack at the average civilian's wallet. Some people will automatically leave a site if a bunch of commercials pop-up on the screen. Pop-ups, don't even make me go there?

So, the aim of the game is to make a site that offers the public to be part of the action as well as being a source of knowledge or information that is in demand. A simple to navigate, good 'feel', and if possible-innovative site is the means to becoming the popular Internet magnate you've always dreamed of becoming. Another important fact is the idea of 'you'. Your website is a chance to put your identity out there in the world. Be yourself. If you try to appeal to an audience in a way that doesn't reflect your true self, you're destined to fail. Be honest and speak from your real perspective on life. Give it to us from the heart.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Web Business Design - Web-Design

The Seven Deadly Sins of Web Business Design

Before you take a road trip it is usually a good idea to know where you
are going. It is the same when you are building a business, creating a
marketing plan or building your web site. Know what your end result will
be when you are planning and designing your site will help you to build it
properly from day one.

Here are the 7 Deadly Sins that most web business owners commit when
designing their site.

Picking a business without knowing wether there is a deman.

Picking too broad of a subject. If you pick a huge subject like real
estate the likelyhood of soaring to the top of the search engines is slim.
Niches tend to be easier to conquer and more profitable.

Picking a low cost web host. You get what you pay for. Many low cost web
hosts go out of business leaving your business lost in cyber space.

Failure to analyze keywords for profitability. Picking the right key words
for your business can be the difference between making and losing money.

Failure to create and maintain your site's meta tags. These are the html
tags that tell the search engines what your site is about. No metatags
equals little to no traffic to your site.

Failure to optimize your web business for search engine ranking. Just
adding meta tags will not earn you a number one ranking. You need to know
how to pick a domain name, and how many times to include your key words
within your site.

Failure to submit each page to the search engines on a regular basis. The
greater the number of pages in your site that are spidered, the better the
chance that your buyers will find you.

Website Woes: Top Five Offenders
I see a lot of mistakes, but here are the top five offenders you need to
correct to give your site a boost. Bad Title.
A Website Checklist
If you've just finished building your new website (or revamping your old
one), how can you be sure it's "ready for prime time"? Or maybe your
site's been around for awhile and you think it may be due for a makeover.
Because Web technologies, techniques and standards change so rapidly, even
a website that seems "cutting edge" when it's built can look obsolete a
year later.
Does Your Website Induce Seizures?
QUESTION: We promote our web site in all our ad campaigns, but according
to my website statistics program, we are getting very few visitors who
click past the first page. The site has a cool Flash introduction page
that the designer said would impress visitors, but it doesn't seem to be
working.
Why You Should Hire a Professional Website Designer
Your web site should always adhere to standards!A professional web site
designer will provide you with a standard compliant web site that is
cross-browser supported. What does this mean to you? Why should you care?
Any site that isn't standard compliant can "break" in older browsers, or
simply not display at all in, say, text-based browsers.
Size Does Matter!
In this article we will be looking at why you should keep your web page
size small. As any good webmaster knows you should keep the web page size
small, but why? It's really simple, both spiders and visitors hate web
pages that take forever to load because it's harder to spider the web page
or for the visitor they just don't have time to wait for your web page to
come up, after all most web sites are not that great, so why wait if your
the visitor? You should keep images down in size, the best way to do this
is with image compressors.
Web-Safe Fonts for Your Site
Choosing the right typeface for your website copy is important, since it
will affect the way your readers perceive your page (serious and formal,
or friendly and casual). Aside from this, there are also important
usability concerns.
No More Jargon! Pamper Your Audience!
When your company built its website, did you think about the content (the
text) of your site? Did you write it for your customers? The answer to
these questions is often 'No.'The first mistake most companies make when
filling their website with content is overlooking who they're writing for.
How To Rescue Your Graphic Design Project When All Else Fails
Whether you're giving a critical sales presentation to a client, producing
visuals for a meeting, event, trade show or seminar, or unveiling the new
company logo before an audience of shareholders, top-notch graphics will
help ensure that you, your products, and your message receive the
attention they deserve.Yet when you decide to do the graphics in-house to
reduce turnaround time or cut expenses, those logos, photos, charts,
graphs, pictures, timelines, illustrations, etc.
Effective Website Design
In this era of ultra-sophisticated internet marketing and web design,
there is no excuse for an e-business to suffer with an ineffective
website. Whether your goal is to present a basic business website that
briefly introduces and describes your company and product, or you endeavor
to develop a fully-functioning cash-cow storefront, there is a wide array
of design choices to cater to all of your needs.
Images: How To Make Them To Load Fast On Your Web Pages?
1. Use .
Re-Use The Links You Have When Revising Your Site!
Many times I've seen a web site undergo a revision and everything is brand
new, even brand new links! You've worked so hard to get those great page
ranks for all your pages and then you get rid of them? NO NO NO.It's the
same reason why people buy "expired domains".
The Secret To A Profitable Website
Whether you are planning on having a website built for your business or
you are looking for ways to increase the sales being generated (if any)
from an existing website the following information will be of enormous
benefit to you.How To Measure Your Success The success of any website
marketing or sales strategy can be measured in terms of how many prospects
exposed to the marketing/sales strategy actually convert to sales.
Text Is King!
Are you building your website? If so, STOP! Take a look at what you have
done so far. How many images do you have? How much text do you have?If
your website has more images than text then you could be in trouble.
Web Design Tips To Boost Your Sales
The way you design your web site affects your visitors' online experience.
As each visitor to your site is a potential customer, the easier they find
your web site to use and the more they enjoy being on it, the higher the
chance that they will make a purchase.
Integrating Advertising into Your Web Design
If you are going to be placing ads on your website, you'll want to put
some thought into how you'll integrate them. Poor integration of ads into
your website will cause visitors to click away fast.
How To Improve The Professional Look And Feel Of Your Website
Projecting a professional image is paramount to your website's success. It
can make or break your online business.
Usability Lessons from the Hospital
Usability isn't only for Web design. It's also applicable in the real
world as things aren't always well-designed.
How To Create A Homepage That Works
Want to know what the worst thing to say on a homepage is?"Welcome to our
homepage."And yet, time after time, we all come across such homepages on
the Internet.
Web Site Redirection - How to Implement a 301 Redirect
You just created a new web site but want to pass on the search engine
rankings of the old one to the new one. What is the most effective and
spider/visitor friendly strategy to implement your web site redirection?

Do-It-Yourself or Hire a Professional Designer

Remember your vision for your company and the brand or statement you want
to make when any of your current or potential customers come in contact
with you. You have to impress them in all the ways you connect with them.

DIY (Do-It-Yourself)

?? Knowledge is Power
I highly recommend reading and
learning about graphic/web design.
It's a good idea in a long-term sense

By learning design techniques, it will

your image to your target market.
The most important lesson to remember
is if you start your design project,
don't forget about Quality. I may not
call myself a copywriter, but I do write
my own content and persuasive
marketing materials... But I feel fairly
confident about my copy because I
have taken steps to learn about writing
copy that sells and you can do the same
for design. Read books. Take classes.
Learn the software.

?? It's an affordable route
Nothing is more affordable that pulling
up your sleeves and doing it yourself
especially if you don't have a budget to
spare on outsourcing.

?? It gives you instant gratification
It's nice to have control and once your
learn the tricks of the trade, you can pat
yourself on the back for a job well-done.

Hiring a Professional

?? How much time do you have?
Designing your marketing materials
(website, business card, stationary,
ezine, postcards, etc.) is not just about
learning about the graphic design
software and, in the case of web design...
learning HTML. Your designer will know
how to harness color theory and how to
organize your content & information to
readable chunks, allow your viewers to focus
on the important benefits, evoke a certain
feeling or thought, and add supporting
graphics that clearly and effectively
communicate your message.

?? Don't you want to concentrate on business?
When you are a small business, you probably
play the role of sales, customer service,
accounting and need to concentrate on
strategies to build business. Hiring lets you
make the decisions to take your business to
the next step, communicate your wants/needs
but then hand it off to someone who can
effectively and productively implement the
project.

?? You do care about quality, right?
You get what you pay for. A quality designer
will only want the best for you and your
business. They live off long-term relationships
and want great testimonials from you.

?? Don't think "service provider".
Think long-term partnerships.

Design Matters in our Visual Culture - Web-Design

Design Matters in our Visual Culture

FIRST IMPRESSIONS.

First impressions often leave lasting impressions. Impressions also result
in people's perceptions. There goes that age-old debate -- "Perception
versus Reality." I say that perception is someone's impression of reality.
And sometimes... no matter what is reality, you just can't change people's
perception of a situation or thing.

Let's define these words...(im·pres·sion) noun: a characteristic, trait,
or feature resulting from some influence; the act of impressing.
(per·cep·tion) noun: a result of observation.

To make a long story short, "Yes, design does matter!"

? When you meet someone you hope to date, don't you want to make a good
first impression? You want to be in nice clothes, have your hair just
right and be in the right place at the right time.

? When you shop for books at the bookstore, doesn't the nicely designed
books attract your attention... let's be honest, we do sometimes judge a
book by it's cover then read on for content?

? When you meet people, don't you give them a firm handshake? Why do you
do this? Because you want them to know you are confident.

? When you attend networking events and you hand people your business
card, you don't want to say, "These are just my temporary business cards."
I've heard this many times at networking events. You lose credibility and
your ego and confidence gets deflated doesn't it?!

Your website can ruin or build your credibility. Which would you prefer?
People can judge how professional and/or serious you are about your
business when they start looking at your website (or any other marketing
materials they get their hands on). Online (on the Internet) you have only
a few seconds to impress your visitors before they make a conscious
decision to click away or click for more information. So help them make it
easy to click for more information.

You should put the same effort and attention in your marketing materials
(business cards, letterheads, postcards, direct mail, voice mail greeting,
etc.) as you do for growing your business. So if you decide to (re)build a
website, remember that impressions online should compliment what you'd
like your potential and current customers to remember you by... as if you
had met face-to-face.

Ten Design Mistakes to Avoid - Web-Design

Ten Design Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these mistakes and your site will be steps ahead of your competition.

1. Not planning your site
Before you even have a website, you must have an idea, a focus. Why do you
want a website? What are your plans and goals for the site? Sit down and
draw out a map of possible pages and ideas for your site. Include your
site's purpose --whether it is to sell more product or make the public
more aware of your issue -- whatever it may be. Build your site from it's
strong foundation (your goals) and you'll have a better, more solid site.

2. Failing to put contact information in a plainly seen location.
This could be disastrous. If a customer doesn't see this information, they
can't contact you. You should consider a 'Contact Us' button or link from
your Home page. Even better, make a link to your email address in your
header or footer, somewhere that will show up on every page. Even if no
one ever contacts you this way, just the presence of this information
comforts edgy customers.

3. Broken Links
Do you enjoy clicking on a search result only to get a Page Not Found
Error? No one likes them. Check your site statistics at least once a month
(if not more) to make sure you don't have bad or broken links.

4. Outdated Information
A sure turn-off to a potential customer is the presence of old
information. If it's July and your website is announcing the 'new'
products available in February, your site just lost major credibility.
Make sure your information is up-to-date. Consider adding a 'Whats New'
button or a Business Blog.

5. Too Many Font Styles and Colors
This is a huge pet-peeve of my company. I've had people ask me to review
their website and the first thing I notice is 4 different fonts. It looks
bad, unorganized and unappealing. Different colors may attract the eye for
a short time, but constant flashing or otherwise bright fonts (and
graphics!) become annoying. Beware, this is a sure-fire way to scare
people away from your site!

6. Orphan Pages
Every website has a heirarchy, a sort of tree that branches out from the
Home Page. While most of your visitors visit you through your home page,
there are times when a page further down interests someone, and they may
copy that link and send it to a friend. This is where you need to pay
attention. That friend may like what you have to offer, but they can't
find out how to contact you, or how to get back to your Home Page. That's
an orphan page. Every page on your site should, at a minimum, have a link
back to your Home page. I would suggest adding a contact link at minimum.

7. Frames
Frames at one time were the talk of the industry. They were the original
Content Management System (CMS) for your site. Nowadays they are few and
far between. If you are designing a site, don't use frames. Newer
technologies such as server-side includes are much more common and
accepted. Your pages look fresher and those silly bars don't get in the
way.

8. Disabling the BACK button and excessive Pop-Ups
Have you been to a website and decided that it wasn't the information you
were looking for? When you clicked the BACK button, did you suddenly get a
barrage of windows (or, pop-ups) to your dismay? These things rarely
actually work, and worse off, the reason you hit the BACK button is
because you DIDN'T want any more information from that site. Don't break
the BACK button. There are other ways to get your user's attention.

9. Slow loading pages
While personal and hobby sites may normally be slow, there should be no
reason for your business or other professional website to be slow loading.
Today's Internet surfer won't wait long for information from your site -
there are too many others with the same thing! Make sure your pages load
quickly. If the server is slow, consider a different host. If your
webpages are full of applets or large graphics, consider a page/site
redesign.

10. Using Leading-Edge Technology
While the Internet is all about new and fancy stuff, don't be the first to
do it. While it may 'look cool' to you, you ultimately need to decide if
it actually enhances your user's experience. Do the flashy cartoons make
your customer more apt to buy from you? Probably not. How many of your
customers have to install a Plug-In just to see your page right? Do they
have to upgrade their browser to contact you? Not good. Wait until the
technology is either more of a standard or gone - you'll save face with
potential and future customers.

Building Your Website to Save You Money - Web-Design

Building Your Website to Save You Money

Does your website make you any money? Does it SAVE you any money?

Websites are more than just marketing tools, out there in Cyber-Land
effortlessly promoting you and your products. While that's great, why not
use that same website to save yourself some money?

How? Well, while I don't know your particular situation, I can provide you
with some thought-provoking ideas that you can take back to your web
designer for more input.

Reduce your support costs.

It is often cheaper, easier, and more effective to support customers over
the Internet than through more tradiditonal methods such as telephone and
direct mail. Services such as instant messaging and Get1on1
(www.get1on1.com) provide immediate chat facilities to current and
potential customers.

Corporations can support their employees and business partners over their
corporate intranets, keeping them informed and soliciting their feedback.
Providing documentation for perusal saves time and reduces labor on your
email server.

Providing a map to your location can save your receptionist valuable
minutes on the phone explaining turns and streets, freeing her up for more
important tasks.

Including a forum on your site can bring people of a common industry or
interest together to discuss upcoming events, current problems, and other
interesting ideas and thoughts. These forums can grow very large very
quickly. And, in the meantime, your website traffic increases. Stick an ad
on the forum and bring in more sales from people that you already know
have expressed interest in your industry.
